“Fear Conqueror”

February 1, 2021 by Nadine Gordon

I’ve seen the Thunder Birds again.  They’re dark ominous creatures, larger than their brothers the eagle.  They’re accompanied by lightning bolts and thunder.  At one time I feared their appearance.  Now, I realize Thunder Birds warn me not to give my fear power.

The earth mother is beating strongly.  Her energy is pulling at my heart strings.  She is calling me outdoors.  It’s what I need to do to lighten up.  I’ve been very tense lately and full of fear.  I’m fearful because I think the seeds I planted this spring will not grow.  I need to hear the earth’s music.  I need to see the artwork of Spirit.

I am pulled eastward and slightly south on a narrow curved path that borders the coulee.  The trail has been carved out by wildlife which inhabits this land.  It is perfect this path.  It reminds me of life and about the most important lessons in life that I’ve learned.  My most important lessons were always learned when I strayed off track.  The path I’m following today has a subtle curving nature which reminds me of the uniqueness in life.  We humans would certainly be a boring race if we were all identical.  We need to give ourselves credit for the lessons we’ve learned.  It took great amount courage for most of us to be just where we are at this very moment and sometimes, we forget how brave we’ve been in the past.

The path ends at the edge of the creek.  I will stop here for a moment and drink in the beauty and sounds of the earth mother before I make a choice about which direction I must take to overcome my fear.  The vibrations from earth mother’s core are strong, everything is in balance.  The sounds and smells around me are all simple in perfection and as I align with the earth mother, I realize that the seeds I have sown are young but they are strong.  There is no reason for fear.  The simple love of a dream is enough to protect, nourish and nurture the seeds into seedlings.  All one needs do is love an idea!  My courageous act of love will feed the dream for it can only be starved through fear.  I wave Thunder Bird away, direct him back to the crack in the universe and notice how the world is brighter and clearer in every way.  I feel lighter now that Thunder Bird has disappeared.  In its place stands Pegasus, conqueror of dragons and demons.  He is my reward.  He is telling me it is safe to ride him high in the incandescent sky.  I will accept the invitation, conquering fear is hard work.  I can be of the earth but not from it today. I have earned the lightness freedom brings.

Being human, we all battle with fear of one kind or another.  Fear is instilled in us at an early age.  It makes us feel that we are not worthy.  This is simply not true.

We have free will as humans and we are all free to make choices.  Life is a puzzle and sometimes, we make a wrong choice along our walk.  Once in a while, we choose the wrong piece time and time again before deciding that the piece simply does not fit.  When we glean wisdom from the choices we make, life becomes easier and there is no need to tread down the same path.  But, fear has great power and it seems that we only conquer one fear in order to face another.  Chief Dan George said, “What human beings do not know, they fear.  What they fear, they destroy.”  The trick with fear is to look it in the face, then love it.  Fear has no power over you unless you allow it.  Be careful not to hurt another in your quest to conquer fear for fear is instinctual and it is tricky, it strikes out in funny ways.  Don’t let fear kill your dreams.  Nurture you dreams into reality.  Just love them it’s all that’s necessary.

If you feel yourself getting depressed, remember this; depression is rage internalized.  Rage is fear.

Ask yourself the hardest question of all.  Ask yourself, “What am I afraid of?”  Listen for the answer.  Breathe through the fear then reward yourself by riding high.

Have courage.  Hope for the world is alive.  Start small.  Start with yourself.
