The Candle

October 28, 2021 by Nadine Gordon

“When the gruesome wind howls in the darkness and claws with destructive fingers at your barriers, you will be tempted to curl up into a ball and hide.  You may feel more inclined to seek a dark place to hide away and to think deep thoughts or to nurse an emotional wound.  It may seem like the natural thing to do.  It may even seem like the safest thing to do,” the demonic entity taunted.  “But in the end, these things will drive you to madness and I will win!”

“You have already won,” she conceded.

There was a certain acceptance and graciousness in the voice of the woman. Her surrender infuriated the entity.

“I will rip you to shreds and sink you into a darkness you will never recover from!” it growled as it swirled around her tearing and ripping at her garments and pelting her with shards of dirt, loose grass and leaves then shoved at her with an uncommon force designed only to push her off balance and into a quicksand like vortex of hell.

The woman stood still.  She felt no need to fight.  She sought the path of least resistance.  It took no effort to anchor one’s self to the center of the earth or connect to the heavens and let the energies of both balance within her being.  She trusted in the solidness of her decision and lifted her eyes heavenward in spite of the darkness which swirled about her.  Above her head a crow floated effortlessly in her energy field. It was protected from the unworldly energies swirling about them and was an ally sending her a message about unmovable trust and taking a higher path even in dark times.

The entity’s ghoulish face appeared before her shrieking in distain, its one last attempt to beat her down with a verbal taunt fell on heedless ears.  With fists clenched, it whirled away from this boring female target toward another more inclined to do battle.

Her eyes still heavenward, she watched as the crow played in the remnants of wind that followed behind the entity like entrails.

In the beginning the world was dark, came a fleeting thought as she observed the crow now barely discernable in the charcoal blackened sky.  The veil had more than just thinned during the Blood Moon.  It had all but disappeared.  Negative forces attacked the living and diminished the light with soot.

The entity was correct, she certainly did feel the need to curl into a ball and hide in a corner.  Already she could hear the others.  Their lamenting wails carried far on icy blasts of air. They were the lost souls – those who had already been driven mad – Minions of the demonic force.  Wearisome grief, fear and anger now consumed them. Their disillusionment clung to the oxygen giving it a foul, dank odor as it filtered through agonized cries. The acrid stench rode through the atmosphere on destructive, deadly winds.  A precursor warning for what followed.

The lost followed the entity.  They sensed a war and they wanted power even if it meant losing their soul to the darkness forever. That was the route of darkness – thieving power from others. The Minions were content to bask in the shadows of the entity and scavenge on its leftover droppings. Crowds of vacant eyed lost souls now roamed the planet. What power the entity didn’t take the Minions stole – they left nothing in their wake but death. But, she had chosen not to fight.  This insanity was a human condition and she trusted in nature.

Madness swirled about her.  She swayed with the energy neither giving nor taking power as it danced around her then disappeared towards the ebony abyss beyond.  The crazed energy had taken nothing from her. It had not recognized her as a power source. Her mind was clear.  What if others had learned this secret?  There had to be others like her. Perhaps they too were seeking light amidst the darkness.  If only she could signal them.

She smiled, as she reminisced about the candle in a story which lit the way home for a lost family man.  I will not be held hostage by a demonic presence.  I must face my fears and shine the light on the darkness.  Facing ones fears or dark thoughts lessens the resistance.

“In the beginning there was only dark. Darkness is repulsed by light.  A light can show the way,” she murmured as she reached into her stash of treasures and pulled out a candle.  Placing it in the center of her re-enforced boundary, she set her intention then moved her hand gracefully over the wick.

“Let there be light,” she commanded.

The wick sparked and a tiny flame danced atop its wax host. As the candle flickered happily, it sent its warmth into the sable colored world and illuminated the darkness.

“You’re not alone,” she whispered as leaned over the candle and peered into the gothic black expanse.  “May this help you find your way.”

In the distance, another light flickered. It glowed brightly in the darkness.

And then; another light flickered. Then; another.  And, another and another as if by magic, dots of light appeared in the distance, each flicker lighting the sky with their singular beauty.

She gasped as she witnessed the enchantment of a blackness now filled with the light of stars and took comfort in knowing that she was not alone.  And, they took comfort in the knowing of it.

The stars sent out beams of light connecting to one another like gossamer. Words appeared in the webbing as the seekers of light signaled to one another.

This is what they wrote among the stars.

Remember:

During dark ghoulish times, you are not alone.  There are others like you.  Light your candle.  Be the star in someone else’s darkness. Find your way home.  I am here.

Somewhere in the ebony abyss she heard the demonic entity writhing and moaning in pain as it attempted to skirt the light and hide in the shadows away from the lost souls now stalking it with the intent of regaining their power.

“I concede,” the entity shrieked as the first of the Minions leapt upon it.

And, another light flickered in the darkness as a lost soul found its way home.

Happy Halloween!

Seems reassuring that no demonic entity can steal our power. The scary part is how we can so easily give it away.

It is truly frightening that people unknowingly give away their power! I totally agree with your assessment!

Oh that one. That one’s intended for next week. I somehow screwed up and momentarily scheduled it to post right away. You weren’t supposed to see it. Now you must forget everything you saw.

This was a departure from what I’m accustomed to reading of your works. It’s dark, yet has lessons. Perfect for Halloween 🎃

      I thought so too Terry!
      I don’t write dark…
It was a challenge and then to bring light back into it was quite fun!
      Happy Halloween 🎃
