Sundogs

January 25, 2022 by Nadine Gordon

“Who let the dogs out?”

The Sun let the dogs out!

Obviously, the Sun’s dogs needed out for a good run, perhaps they’d been penned up for too long of a stretch or maybe they just needed to get out and howl at the full moon last week.  Dogs can be very insistent when they want outside.  Madam Sun probably coined the term, ‘hounded!’  In which case, I am totally able to relate to her or even sympathize!

Dog Owner Beware!

Sundogs foretell of colder, wetter weather during our winter months.

On the Canadian prairie, this means snow.

Since the Sun let her dogs out seven days ago, my two dogs seem determined to join hers outdoors. I just wish they’d make up their minds! My dogs like to be outside in the presence of the Sun but at -20 degrees Celsius, it was too cold for them to stay out there for any length of time.  Again, the question begging to be answered was:

“Who let the dogs out?”

I’ve let the dogs out – and in, and out, and in – and so forth.  The cold, damp weather has had my four legged companions hound me incessantly for the past week!

According to the ‘Old Wives Tales,’ the cold weather foretold by sundogs could last for two weeks.  (Luckily, it only lasted for 3 days but by then I was be dog tired and ready for milder weather!)

Still, I love the ice like prisms formed by the sun during our winter season on the prairie.  My heart always does a little leap for joy when I see sundogs. They are welcomed phenomena’s in nature which hint of change.  They also bring a sense of hope for the future.

Nature speaks to us if we are willing to watch and listen.

In medieval times, seeing a sundog was good luck.  The three bright lights were interpreted as the sign of the trinity – a sign of great fortune.

The Stoney Nakoda call sundogs, “wahiâba îtű-kiye,” that means “sun makes a fire.”

Sundogs are also called Sun halos, Sunbows or Whirling Rainbows.

An Ancient American Indian Prophecy tells of time of change called the ‘Whirling Rainbow’:

‘There will come a day when people of all races, colors, and creeds will put aside their differences. They will come together in love, joining hands in unification, to heal the Earth and all her children. They will move over the Earth like a great Whirling Rainbow, bringing peace, understanding and healing everywhere they go…

We will learn how to see and hear in a sacred manner.

Men and women will be equals; all children will be safe, elders will be respected and valued for their contributions to life. The whole Human race will be called, ‘The People,’ and there will be no more war, sickness or hunger forever.’

Only time will tell if the magical Whirling Rainbow arrived with the sundogs last week to bring us this prophecy which foretells of peace, understanding, healing and hope for the future or maybe, animals will simply hound mankind until we finally listen to the messages brought to us through nature then unify in peace as, “The People.”

You’d think with all those suns, the weather would warm up rather than get colder. Nice photo.

True, but sundogs are actually reflections of the sun on ice crystals in the air. That’s the simplified version as I’m not a meteorologist! Lol

It’s pretty amazing how the sun can reflect off ice crystals, like that.

    Wonderful post.
I would so love to capture sundogs! It’s been cold enough here in the Montreal region so I am convinced they did appear somewhere…

The weather here has been quite sporadic…

This was a great read, Nadine! It started out quite comical with the story of your indecisive dogs. I loved how you used the song lyrics and could hear the song playing in my head as you told of letting your dogs in and out. Then, there was the skilful transition to the topic of world peace. The photo of the sun dogs is beautiful!
